At 1000m altitude, but under 1.5 hours from Marrakech, Ouirgane Valley is the perfect escape
from the hussle and bussle of city life. It’s part of the Toubkal National Park, located in the
tranquil foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. The valley is known for its Juniper and Thuja
forests with lush greenery set against the surrounding red-earth hills.
Due to its location, Ouirgane has a more moderate climate than nearby Marrakech, meaning
milder winters and cooler summers. As one of the lesser visited areas of the Atlas Mountains it’s
still an up and coming destination, so visit now before it gets busy.
Expect to see stunning views of the Toubkal range – at over 4100m North Africa highest point –
set against the greens and reds of the valley it’s quite a sight. The vegetation brings a wide range
of bird life, and a great time to visit is during the almond blossoms of spring.
It is a great area for cyclists, but if biking is not your thing, there is still plenty to do in the
Ouirgane Valley. Hiking is very popular and trails range from easy afternoon rambles to trekking
up Mount Toubkal. You can also hop on a horse to explore from a different kind of saddle. It’s a
destination that works well for families, with plenty of options for younger visitors.

Just outside the village of Ouirgane, in the heart of Berber country, you’ll find Domaine de la
Roseraie mountain retreat. Created from the vision of Mister Abdelkader Fenjiro, who in 1970 left
his prestigious hotel in Marrakech to create a mountain retreat in the Ouirgane Valley.
The Domaine is decorated in a traditional Moroccan style with a strong Berber influence. Expect
patios and terraces surrounded by rose bushes, wildflowers, olive groves and orchards.
There are three swimming pools to relax around, and the Pinewood Wellness Center offers the
chance to indulge. Relax in a traditional Hammam steam room, enjoy a massage and try local
produce such as soaps, clays, salts and therapeutic plants.
The food at Domaine de la Roseraie is a fusion of French cuisine with ancient Moroccan
specialties. The meals are all accompanied by local seasonal produce, fruits, and olive oil pressed
in the old fashion way.
